Introduction to Sanskrit Meter & Chanting with Anne Vial *

Love Sanskrit? Love rhythm? Sanskrit comes alive with chanting!

Learn to recognize and chant some of the most common meters in Classical Sanskrit. Participants will be able to identify meters independently using a simple method of analysis from the long classical tradition, with examples from devotional hymns and verses. By the end of each class, everyone will have a 'toolbox' for reciting favorite Sanskrit verses rhythmically and correctly.

Fun and informal class setting includes:

- Syllables, rhythm & chanting
- Tools for meter analysis & study
- Meter definitions and example verses
- “Meter-clinic”: bring your own verse!

Accessible to students of all levels of Sanskrit.

Anne Vial, from Nuremberg, Germany, works as a literary scout in Barcelona, Spain. She graduated from University College London (BA in Modern European Studies) and King's College, University of Cambridge (MPhil in Social and Economic History). She is blessed with wonderful Sanskrit teachers: Bharati Devi at Ananda Ashram, Indira and Shanta Bulkin at The East-West Sanskrit Institute. She also studies with Dr. M.A. Jayashree (Mysore, India), Dr. Elena Sierra (University of Barcelona), and Dr. Antonia Ruppel (Munich). Anne loves chanting, and the science of metrics.
